“Sordevolo Passion Play 2027” (Biella): The Folk Theatre Spectacular Debuts at TTG Rimini International tourism professionals show strong interest in a production unique to Italy.

Thursday, October 15, 2026 – Rimini once again proves to be a key venue for international tourism during the TTG Travel Experience. From October 14 to 16, national and international tour operators convened to highlight a rapidly growing tourism market—a vital pillar of Italy’s economy. The Sordevolo Passion Play featured prominently with a dedicated stand and an official presentation held today, Thursday, October 15, at the Piedmont Region pavilion.

During the presentation, particular emphasis was placed on the steadfast dedication shown by the community of Sordevolo over the centuries in preserving this deeply rooted tradition, staged every five years at the Giovanni Paolo II Amphitheatre in Sordevolo (Biella). “Ours has evolved into a folk theatre spectacle unlike any other in Italy: over 600 actors and extras, a 4,000-square-meter open-air amphitheatre, 2,500 seats, 15-meter-high scenery, and 15 horses on stage. These figures define our identity and underscore the scope of our commitment,” stated Stefano Rubin Pedrazzo, President of the Sordevolo Folk Theatre Association.

Participation in the trade fair highlighted the Biella area as an emerging destination offering an authentic alternative to mass tourism and overtourism. Against this backdrop, today’s presentation showcased the Sordevolo Passion Play and its traditions in connection with the local territory. “Culture holds great appeal for international travelers, and Biella has much to offer. Theatrical performances, food and wine traditions, pristine nature, and key cultural sites make the Biella region unique and drive tourist interest,” stated Luca Broccatelli of Fondazione BIellezza.

The performances, scheduled for the summer of 2027, are designed for a broad and diverse audience. “The production is continuously evolving, bridging religion, spirituality, and culture. It is a multifaceted spectacle grounded in historical and philological research into set design and script, alongside rigorous preparation with the cast and extras. Rehearsals begin this month with the 2027 cast—a group officially unveiled on October 3 at the amphitheatre where the Sordevolo Passion Play will come to life once again,” explained the Association President.

The TTG trade fair in Rimini served as an ideal platform to promote Sordevolo and the wider Biella area. Through targeted B2B meetings and a well-attended presentation, organizers showcased a comprehensive travel offering tailored to an international market increasingly focused on authentic and unconventional destinations.
